Artist Bio:
Mieke Simone is a Dutch-American, Los Angeles based artist that has been represented by galleries throughout the LA Area since 2021. Her main discipline in art focuses on mixed media collage, as well as conveying meaning through the use of color. Many of her pieces include one of a kind photographs from decades past, many coming from the 1970’s and early 1980’s, but span as far back as the late 19th century. The art created is vibrant, joyful, thought provoking, and energetic—often drawing on the theme of celebration. The colors in use also evoke the time period of the 70’s and 80’s with the use of high saturation and neons. Mieke also recently debuted an entire watercolor collection, and also has painted many acrylics.
Many of the pieces bring modern interpretations to past historical art styles, as seen by her modern Japanese Edo style illustrations, as well as being inspired by animals in nature. During the Edo period, The Netherlands was the only country in Europe that traded with Japan, and many of her Japanese inspired pieces pay homage to her heritage and the Dutch relationship with the Japanese and it’s impact on art during this time period. Her pieces include motifs such as butterflies and dragonflies, which represent transformation and emergence—as well as whales—which are symbolic of abundance, glory, and acceleration. Mieke’s interpretation of time and creating a visual representation of the movement of time and themes of eternity in her work is also heavily influenced aesthetically by the neo-futurism movement. Paintings such as ‘The Mountain I Know’, and ‘A Bright New Dawn’ were actually painted at the residence of Syd Mead, who is the founder of the neo-futurism art movement, and who’s designs inspired many, including Elon Musk with the creation of the Cybertruck.
Her inspiration comes from her upbringing as a dual citizen, traveling all throughout Europe and being exposed to the most influential art in the world at a young age. Her pieces also include the use of text, which connects to her experience as a writer, having previously studied poetry in London during her college years. In addition, Mieke spent time living in Antibes in the South of France, where notable artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Chagal had called home in decades past—furthering her passion for fine art.
In addition to fine art, Mieke has worked in both the dance and music industries since 2019, and has danced in notable Billboard ranking music videos, as well as contributed artistically to other musicians creative visions though her artwork and writing. She has participated in shows such as LA Art Show and sold to A List Clientele. To listen to her newest single, search for Fly - Mieke and Eturnian on any streaming platform.
